Everyday people read our newspapers. Here is just a flavour of the typical audience that use our local media (these reader pen-portraits are all from an ethnographic project carried out in Hull):
Bill is a 61-year-old taxi driver. He's married to Cindy (a retired florist) and is a proud grandfather. Bill reads the Daily Mail during his morning break in his cab and his local daily paper in the afternoon. He likes to read both to get different perspectives on news. He's a big fan of the letters which enable him to "find out what people are thinking". Watch this clip to find out more about how media fits into Bill's busy life...
Steve is a 24-year-old bookseller currently looking for a job related to his anthropology degree. He is engaged to Tamsin (a care worker). They are both just starting out post-university. They consult their local daily paper particularly for jobs and enjoy a mixture of national newspapers on a Sunday. Watch this clip to find out more about how Steve & Tam make media work for them...
